Andrea in Ecuador

Join Andrea on a tour of the Central Highlands in Ecuador. Andrea will be based in the city of Riobamba, in the center of the country. Situated on a high plain the Andes mountains, Riobamba sits at an elevation of 9,022 ft (2750 m), and is surrounded by snowcapped peaks, mostly volcanos. Riobamba is a popular starting point for people who want to climb Ecuador's highest peak--Chimborazo 20,702 ft (6310 m)! It is also a center for commerce, attracting villagers who travel from throughout the mountains to sell their goods and crafts in large open markets such as medicinal roots and herbs, llama wool, fine cloth, woven agave bags, rope and sandals, and decorative hats and shawls.

The Lourdas site
Once situated in Riobamba, Andrea will be assisting with archaeological investigations in a Spanish Colonial town which was captured in a landslide, preserving much of the historic integrity of the site. The archaeological project, led by Dr. Ross Jamieson of Simon Fraser University, includes several Ph.D students who are collecting information for their dissertations including a historic hospital, convent, and monastary. Andrea will be conducting the paleoethnobotanical study or the study of historic plant remains associated with various archaeological deposits throughout the historic townsite. Stay tuned for blogs.
