Andrea in Ecuador

The Crew

On the far right is Michael St. Denis who is a Ph.D student at SFU and is interested in historic archaeology of institutions, particularly medicine. He will soon be excavating in a Colonial hospital in the town of Sicalpa where we are now excavating. To the left is Eve Nimmo who is a Ph.D student at University of Reading near London. She is doing her research in a convent and is interested in deciphering gender and ethnicity through archaeological remains. Next to Eve is Claudine Vallieres who is a Ph.D student at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. She will be looking at the faunal assemblage (i.e. animal bones) to answer questions about ethnicity and status and perhaps trade in Colonial Sicalpa. Next to Claudine is Dr. Ross Jamieson, Assistant Professor at SFU and director of the project. He is interested in deciphering identity and ethnicity in the Colonial period. We are currently excavating the Lourdas site for his research. Next to Ross is Maeve, his 4 yr old daughter. She is into pink, purple, and a dog called Tarzan who is currently guarding our house from cats and burglars (?). On the left side is Laurie, Maeve's mom, Ross' wife. She has been teaching at Douglas College in Vancouver, BC. Her research interest is pre-Columbian ceramics.

Jose Luis Espinoza is from Cuenca, Ecuador. He has been helping interpret for me at the University (when we went to the Herbarium) and various places around town to get my flotation machine built and set up. Today [Monday, June 13] we had a trial run and it finally works properly! He is not in the crew photo, but is pictured [below] with some of the plants we have been collecting and identifying so that we know how to identify the seeds in our samples. He has a passion for plants (some would say neurosis), and raises sequoia trees in Cuenca.
